2008 Bicycle Film Festival Kicks Off Tonight at Studio B

Pitchfork reminds us that the New York edition of the 2008 Bicycle Film Festival kicks off 9 p.m. tonight at Studio B in Greenpoint. (There are a few hipster bike messenger types in that neck of the woods, no?) This evening’s event, the aptly titled “Bikes Rock,” will be the first of five consecutive days of citywide film, music and art programming celebrating that manual, green (and here in New York, a bit dangerous?) form of two-wheeled transportation that is the bicycle: read more »

Hot Tickets: The Zombies, The Breeders, Elvis Costello

CONCERTS:

The Zombies (file under hip '60s rock bands made popular anew by Wes Anderson movies and TV commercials) are playing Irving Plaza on July 11. The group will have just come off an extensive European stint with fellow British invaders the Yardbirds, though they only seem to have two U.S. dates lined up at the moment (the other is in Virginia). [On Sale: Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m.]

'90s indie rock preservation alert: The Breeders are playing Webster Hall on June 10! Not as major as the Pixies reunion tour, but this is your chance to relive "Cannonball" in all of its Alternative Nation glory. [On Sale: Friday, Feb. 15 at noon] read more »

Hot Tickets: Navigating the Strike With Rock 'n' Roll; Get Ready for Blonde Redhead, James Blunt

 THEATER

Well, if you don’t feel guilty about crossing the picket lines, Mel Brook’s Young Frankenstein at the Hilton Theatre is still the hottest ticket on Broadway, albeit with a slightly less fiery flame. According to the Observer’s John Heilpern, the “production is handsome, like a stylish facade, but the pace of the first act is sluggish. (Act two is better and funnier.) Only Mr. Brooks would write a slapstick scene between a Monster on the loose and a lonely blind hermit. Ms. Stroman’s direction of the farcical mayhem is uninspired—as if the laughter would come automatically. (Devotees of the movie obliged, laughing in advance.)” read more »
