The Economist Mulls Move, Maybe 'Very Far Downtown'

Letters to the editor in The Economist may run under the anachronistic and patriarchal greeting “Sir,” but The Economist is no media dinosaur. Exhibit A: Its New York presence, like Alvy Singer’s universe, is expanding. The Economist, sir, is on the commercial real estate market. read more »

Jon Meacham's Cri de Coeur: Why Do You Read The Economist Instead of Newsweek?

After about an hour, there seemed to be no more questions for him, so Newsweek editor Jon Meacham turned to his audience—about 100 graduate students at Columbia journalism school—and said he had a question for them: Did anyone in the room read Newsweek or Time? There was a small, awkward rumbling before finally, a man shouted, "No!"

Mr. Meacham scanned the audience for his quarry and then asked the journalism student, clad in a black turtleneck, whether he read The Economist. Yes, he did. read more »

Economist Admits to Plagiarism

The Economist admits that an article from its October 18 issue was plagiarized. The correction reads:

The article below on Ugandan guards working in Iraq, written for us by a freelance journalist in Uganda, was drawn substantially from an article published previously in Uganda's Daily Monitor and written by David Herbert. We were, of course, unaware of this. We apologise to Mr Herbert, the Daily Monitor and our readers. read more »
