Council Committee Approves Diaz for City Clerk

City Clerk nominee Hector Diaz is testifying right now in the City Council Rules Committee hearing, and this is easily the most well-attended committee meeting I recall (although I've missed a few).

Among the onlookers in the house is Bronx Democratic Leader Jose Rivera, who got himself a front-row seat by sitting next to Liz in the reporter's section. read more »

The Bronx's Rivera at City Hall for Clerk Vote

That’s Bronx Democratic County Leader Jose Rivera talking to one of Christine Quinn’s top aides, Chuck Meara, by the side staircase in City Hall a few minutes ago.

Rivera is here, primarily, to oversee the vote on city clerk nominee Hector Diaz. The nomination is being considered by the Rules Committee, whose chairwoman, Diana Reyna, is part of the Brooklyn delegation that wants the position to continue to be held by someone from its borough. read more »

The Latest in Quinn's Fight With Brooklyn Over City Clerk: More Waiting

The Rules Committee of the City Council was supposed to meet at 11 o’clock to vote on the new nominee for city clerk. But an aide to Christine Quinn has confirmed the committee hasn't met, which will once again delay a showdown between the speaker and the Brooklyn City Council delegation.

To recap, the only nominee in front of the committee is Hector Diaz of the Bronx, but he would be replacing a clerk from Brooklyn, and the Brooklyn delegation wants to keep that job (and its related patronage perks). read more »

Christine Quinn and the City Clerk Vote

So, the leading candidate for the position of city clerk is Hector Diaz, but the vote that would have confirmed him last month was delayed. The vote is now set for Wednesday and there’s strong opposition from Brooklyn City Council members, because the last city clerk was from their borough, while Diaz is from the Bronx.

One person I spoke to, who is allied with Christine Quinn, told me that the official with the most at stake over this vote is the Speaker.

“I think this is going to be seen as a vote, not on Hector Diaz, but a vote on Chris Quinn,” said the source. “[Her allies are] hard-pressed to allow the Speaker, with two years left, to be undermined."

More after the jump. read more »
