The Other Hillary Haters
On the cover of this week's edition of Pat Buchanan's American Conservative, Hillary takes fire from another direction: The anti-war, anti-Israel right, to whom her support for her husband's interventions in the Balkans seem particularly damning, as does her hard line on Iran. The cover story's author, the libertarian Justin Raimondo, seems to want to make a kind of isolationist common-cause with the Left:
What does Hillary want? A smarter, smoother, better-planned interventionism, one that our allies find more amenable and yet is, in many ways, more militant than the Republican version -- one that "levels with the American people" about the costs of empire and yet doesn't dispute the alleged necessity of American hegemony. As she finds her voice as a would-be commander in chief, it isn't one the traditional Left in this country will recognize. Hers is not the party of Eugene McCarthy but of the neoconservative [Marshall] Wittmann.

First Lease at Ground Zero
Crain's is reporting that Larry Silverstein has his first lease at 7 World Trade Center.
And it's not some wimpy government office, either:
"According to sources close to the deal, a unit of the American Express Co. is in the final stages of negotiating a 15-year lease for about 20,000 square feet at the 52-story skyscraper," the magazine reports.
Massive incentive packages for renting space in the building have Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver, who calls the incentives his "Marshall plan," taking a lot of the credit for the lease-signing. read more »

So far, the candidate blogs are scrubbed clean of personality. Gifford's is, cleverly, written by wife Pamela and brother Marshall, but that's where the fun ends. "Over the last few days, Gifford led the City Council in taking a number of important steps..."
Freddy's and Eliot's are written by the candidates, and mostly travelogues and chronicles of every Genesee Assemblywoman they've encountered. Eliot's offers two highlights: free access to his recent New Republic piece which offers a glimpse of a more populist politician than he used to be; and an extremely lively discussion section with uncensored comments.
"Eliot Spitzer is, I am afraid, a fraud," read one recent item, and today's entertaining Associated Press story notes both Spitzer '08 presidential speculation and the porn somebody posted to the site the day Spitzer declared he was running for governor. read more »
We're impressed that the people at 895 Broadway are being so laid back about this.
As for Freddy, he hasn't been doing much blogging, but in general he's all about being an everyman and his photos certainly back that up. A favorite.
