Press Release Champs

Here's to the folks who work overtime to dispel the notion of a slow news day. (Like, say, today.)

Over the past month, the Queens Chronicle has collected every e mail and fax sent by Queens representatives at all levels of government: city, state and federal. The paper tabulated the total number of communications and [John] Liu came out ahead by a large margin.

The highly scientific results:

The Press Release Champs

City Council: John Liu (D Flushing), 37 e mails, 3 faxes

State Assembly: Mike Gianaris (D Astoria), 7 e mails, 4 faxes

State Senate: Malcolm Smith (D St. Albans), 10 e mails, 14 faxes

Federal Government: Sen. Hillary Clinton, 32 e mails

--releases collected between Nov. 21 and Dec. 21, 2006 by the Queens Chronicle

Blackout Update: Danny's Power is Back On

A small sign that life is returning to normal in Queens:

My cousin Danny Kane said that he just got power back on in his place on 35th Street in Astoria, but only after spending Tuesday, Wednesday and the better half of Thursday struggling through the sweltering darkness.

So, even as the mayor pronounces himself annoyed that Con Ed underestimated the number of people affected by about 50 times, things finally seem to be improving somewhat. And Danny, a structural ironworker by trade, learned a lesson to boot:  read more »

"I'm one of those guys who always believed, for some reason, that when a lamp is plugged in really close to the outlet it should work better, all my appliances are close to the outlet. I'm right by Con Ed, so I guess that isn't the case."

Giff's Mug Money

While Freddy remembers Fox Street, Giff is starting to remember some tough times of his own.

He recently told a crowd in Astoria:

"You know, I remember what it was like to grow up in this city when it was really unsafe. I remember when I would go to the park when I was a little boy and my father used to give me $10 when I went to the park, because he wanted me to be able to give that to my mugger so that if someone mugged me, they would have a good experience and not beat me up. And that's what it used to be like living in New York."

And in case you're wondering, Giff got around to answering that question we were asking ourselves when we heard this:  read more »

"I've only gotten mugged once in my life. I've only gotten mugged once. That is what this city used to be like, and not any more." By the way, Giff shared this Lethemesque recollection while in Astoria visiting Peter Vallone, Jr., Chairman of the Public Safety Committee.
