Hastert to Resign

Dennis Hastert, the Republican Party's longest serving speaker of the House, will retire at the end of his term, according to various news reports.

The Associated Press is confirming what several Illinois papers have been reporting: that Hastert, a representative from Illinois, will formally announce his retirement on Friday.

Sunlight: The Empire Edition

This could be interesting. Former public advocate candidate Andrew Rasiej, who now works for the Sunlight Foundation , is planning to launch a muckraking project in January focusing on lawmakers in New York.

The idea of their mission is to take hard-to-access public information about lawmakers and the legislative process, make it digitally available online, and then let the public have at it. Then, said Rasiej, a technology advisor to the group, "you have an opportunity to match that data with citizen journalists, activists, investigative reporters and others, giving them an opportunity to connect the dots, mesh the data and create a new power center in American politics."  read more »

Albany, needless to say, is simply swimming in dots just waiting to be connected.

Worst of Congress

House Speaker Dennis Hastert is number 1...on Rolling Stone's list of 10 Worst Congressmen.

The choices aren't exactly surprising, given the authors of the list: nearly all of the magazine's choices are Republicans.

Still, a fun concept.

Along with a pithy explanation for each dubious honor is a picture of the congressman that morphs into a less-flattering alter ego.

Hastert turns into a stubbly cowboy named The Highway Robber. The best though is No. 5, Don Young of Arkansas Alaska, also known as Mr. Pork. You can guess how that one turns out.

Conservative Backlash

hastert.jpg

How high is the Foley scandal reaching? The Washington Times , usually a safe haven for all things conservative, has a not-so-subtle editorial saying Dennis Hastert should resign as Speaker of the House.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert must do the only right thing, and resign his speakership at once. Either he was grossly negligent for not taking the red flags fully into account and ordering a swift investigation, for not even remembering the order of events leading up to last week's revelations -- or he deliberately looked the other way in hopes that a brewing scandal would simply blow away. He gave phony answers Friday to the old and ever-relevant questions of what did he know and when did he know it? Mr. Hastert has forfeited the confidence of the public and his party, and he cannot preside over the necessary coming investigation, an investigation that must examine his own inept performance. A special, one-day congressional session should elect a successor. We nominate Rep. Henry Hyde, also of Illinois,

I wonder what the city's only Republican congressman, Vito Fossella of the 13th District, thinks Hastert should stay or go? I'll ask him...when I get him on the phone for that interview.  read more »
