Top Gun will forever forth shoot blanks. Alas, a new ‘Maverick’ has just been crowned—a young man who threatens to ground the sex-appeal of Tom Cruise’s beloved character from the 1986 Tony Scott classic film like a DC-10.

His moniker is Flying Officer William Wales, and he began flight training yesterday at R.A.F. Cranwell. Photos of the royal, budding pilot were just released to the public by Clarence House, the official residence of William’s father, Prince Charles.

But without his lovely Charlie, Maverick would be just another guy in the sky—a jet with nowhere to fly. Not to mention that Top Gun would not be Top Gun without the sexy subplot. So we’ve included this video montage of Prince William’s lovely girlfriend, Kate Middleton.

In a rare loosening of one’s stiff upper-lip, Queen Elizabeth II and her hubby, the Duke of Edinburgh, chose to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary tonight on the Mediterranean island of Malta, where the crowned couple lived for two years after getting hitched. The private overnight visit will come just one day before the Queen and her main squeeze travel on tomorrow to Uganda for a commonwealth summit.  read more »

About 7 percent of Virginia's precincts remain outstanding, with George Allen holding onto a lead of about 17,000 votes over Jim Webb, his Democratic challenger. So where are the uncounted ballots from? The answer is mainly from Prince William and Loudoun Counties in northern Virginia and the city of Richmond. Webb figures to gain some ground when these votes are added up. But a look at the partial returns from Prince William and Loudoun suggests he won't gain many in those counties-- he's only running very slightly ahead of Allen in them now. Richmond is a Webb stronghold, but the 13 uncounted precincts there will not erase much of overall deficit. -- Steve Kornacki
