Morning Memo: Meet Spitzer's Call Girl, Ashley Dupre! And, Michelle Williams Speaks Out About Heath Ledger

via nytimes.com

Even the gossipy bit—Who's That Girl?!?—that all of the tabs were after all day yesterday (us too, in fact) is broken first by The Times: Spitzer's prostitute "Kristen" is in fact known as Ashley Alexandra Dupré, though she was born 22 years ago as Ashley Youmans, in New Jersey. For Your Pre-Oscar Viewing Pleasure: Anderson Cooper Investigates Journalist's Murder on '60 Minutes'

On Sunday's episode of 60 Minutes, Anderson Cooper will report a story about the murder of Chauncey Bailey, the late editor of the Oakland Post, who was shot to death last summer while investigating a shady religious group, run out of an Oakland business called "Your Black Muslim Bakery."

According to CBS' press release, for the first time on television Mr. Cooper will interview the man who confessed to killing the award-winning journalist--and who now claims he gave a false confession and knows who the real killer is.

CNN Taps Stars to Honor Ordinary People

A snarky report in on Page Six of Wednesday's New York Post claimed that CNN publicists were scrambling this week to convince B-list guests to attend the network's first ever "Hero's Tribute," which took place last night at the Museum of Natural History, after first choices like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt did not confirm attendance.

Still: The show—hosted by Anderson Cooper and Christiane Amanpour, and designed to honor some 18 "ordinary people" who, the network says, have helped change our world for the better—must go on! Tyra Banks was on the red carpet, in a Pamela Roland gown and vintage jewelry. "I didn't want to be too trendy," she said. "Anderson's here! I thought I had to look White House-ey!"  read more »

MSNBC's Scarborough: 'Don't Tell me CNN Didn't Know' About Debate Questioner's Hillary Ties

Via The Huffington Post, Joe Scarborough of MSBNC went after CNN this morning for allowing someone with ties to the Hillary Clinton campaign to pose a question at Wednesday's GOP debate.

"Don't tell me that CNN didn't know" that the questioner -- retired Brigadier General Keith Kerr, who asked about the issue of gays in the military -- was associated with the Clinton campaign.  read more »

CNN Tries Hard to Focus on the Issues, Fails

Right after wrapping up the CNN/YouTube Republican debate last night, Anderson Cooper proudly told viewers that CNN's post-game analysis was "not going to focus on the horse race. Instead, tonight, we're looking at the issues."

It was this relentless focus on the issues that produced comments from CNN's panelists like those you'll find after the jump..  read more »

David Lauren and girlfriend Lauren Bush were just a few among the green movement's good-looking rear-guard to sip martinis and muse passionately if not altogether scientifically about the dangers of environmental degradation and the magnificence of the planet beyond Central Park.

“They really showed how beautiful our world is,” said the young Mr. Lauren. “It just overshadowed whatever beauty is in this room.”  read more »

Anderson Cooper Poor-Mouths Yoko

Anderson Cooper's down-home, appealing commencement speech at Yale 10 days ago was marred by a crack he took at Yoko Ono. He brought up a commencement speech she gave 3 years ago, as a non-model.
She said: "I say you can't stand if you've got too much muck in your head. Let it go, and dance through life." So true, so much muck, you know? Muck is a big problem. Of course. it's easier to dance through life if you have a billion dollars, but I digress.

Unfair on two counts. 1, Yoko's advice, to grads of the Maine College of Art, is just fine. People have to try and free themselves. However you do it, do it. When Cooper himself quotes Joseph Campbell, "Follow your bliss," it's not that different from what Yoko's saying.

2, Cooper is descended from megabux. Son of Gloria Vanderbilt, etc. Who's he to make fun of Yoko's money?

Alexandra Jacobs: Victim Of Nothing

jet blueThe Transom is very much relieved to see the Observer's six-months-pregnant and incredibly well-composed features editor Alexandra Jacobs on CNN with Anderson Cooper, discussing her experience as a passenger during tonight's amazing Jet Blue disaster landing. Ms. Jacobs is not one to jump happily into a plane, and, as a fellow airplane-hater, The Transom salutes her on her victory over gravity, worst fears, and malfunction.

In fact, Ms. Jacobs was so composed that she subverted the entire tricky reporter vs. accident victim paradigm.  read more »

The passengers on-board were watching television images of their own plane. It was, Ms. Jacobs told Mr. Cooper, a "postmodern" experience. As the emergency landing began, the flight attendants repeatedly chanted, "'Brace! Brace! Brace!,' she reported, like an upsetting prayer, or "like a mantra." —Choire Sicha

Mixed Messages

Jann Wenner likes his offices clean and his front-of-books concise. "Incoming," Rolling Stone's pop-culture news section overseen by deputy managing editor James Kaminsky, has been stripped of linguistic clutter and renamed "Mixed Media" by Wenner. The new header debuted at the end of August. "He wanted to clearly telegraph what the section is about," Kaminsky said in a phone conversation. "[Wenner] felt the old name was confusing rather than illuminating." Kaminsky added the new name better reflects the section's focus on television, books and the Internet. The current installment of "Mixed Media" opens with capsule reviews of the fall television line-up and offers a sidebar detailing recent books by Iraq War soldiers. Coming up in the next issue: a piece on Anderson Cooper's Katrina coverage-cum-theatrics. --Gabriel Sherman
