Tropic Blunder: Convention Pits Texting vs. Press

DENVER—On Aug. 25, The New York Times’ chief political reporter, Adam Nagourney, was looking for a pair of seats for an interview in a sawdust-ridden tent in the parking lot of Denver’s basketball arena that served as the paper’s media workspace.

The Times wound up bringing so many staffers to this event (60!) that nearly every seat in its space was occupied in that area; he walked over to Bloomberg News, where there were another 30 workstations set up.

The thing about the conventions is that so many reporters come to them. The result is that it’s rare for anyone to write anything important.  read more »

'Alterman-gate' Barely Gets Off The Ground

Nation columnist and prolific debater Eric Alterman is the new Judith Miller! Or, maybe not. At the Democratic debates last night, Alterman was apparently arrested (briefly!) for "criminal trespass" at an open bar.

Anatomy of a Washington ‘Catfight’


Yesterday, Gawker reported on what it called a “catfight” between Nation columnist Eric Alterman and Time.com’s Washington editor, Ana Marie Cox, setting the scene at television host John McLaughlin’s brunch the day after the White House Correspondents’ dinner.

As is his wont, Mr. Alterman fired back via the Huffington Post calling out Gawker on not having had anyone there to see the argument between the two.

He mentioned that we were recording, which is a little embarrassing. But since the cat’s out of the bag, we thought that for that margin of the population that has a stake in this “catfight” we’d lay out almost the whole argument as it appeared on our recorder.
