New York state of mind: Ms. Joel bags a baguette.

Katie Lee Joel—food columnist, cookbook author, Extra! correspondent, Iron Chef judge, former Top Chef host and third wife of singer-pianist Billy—was recently recounting her March 24 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

“I made a meatloaf, and she liked it!” said Ms. Joel, 26, between bites of an avocado salad at the cafe Sant Ambroeus on West Fourth Street, near the townhouse she shares with her husband and two pugs (they also have homes in Miami and on Long Island). “My husband’s not big on doing TV. But he likes Oprah, and he knew that it was important to me.”  read more »

Maybe his luck will change now that nearly a year and a half after listing his 14.2-acre waterfront estate in Centre Island for $37.5 million with Daniel Gale/Sotheby's International Realty, Mr. Joel has turned to the omnipotent Elliman broker Dolly Lenz to sell the estate, according to a listing on her Web site.  read more »

Subprime Mortgages, St. Barts for Socialite-Banker Lauren Remington Platt

Patrick McMullan

Even socialites are not immune to the recent mortgage crisis.

Lauren Remington Platt—a thin, leggy blonde who looks a little like Vogue contributing editor Lauren Davis, but with sharper features—is between internship positions as a financial analyst, she told The Daily Transom last night at the Repetto party, because of “the whole subprime [crisis].” A would-be banker in her mid-twenties, Ms. Platt, who graduated from Columbia, said she worries about a looming market collapse.

“I mean, we are going [to go] through a recession, but I’m hopeful," she said, moving seamlessly from smiling for a photographer to assuming the manner of a stolid financier in mere seconds. Standing tall in a gray-knit Chanel shift dress and Prada boots, she added, "I’m trying to get a job before it really hits this spring.”  read more »
