NYU Says It Will Keep Provincetown Playhouse Walls

New York University announced today that it would not demolish the Provincetown Playhouse, but build above it, preserving the theater’s original structural walls, footprint and volume, following a mini-public backlash.

University spokeswoman Alicia Hurley said “demolishing the theater was never a proposal,” just “bad information in the atmosphere.  read more »

N.Y.U. Pays $9.4 M. for 25 Roosevelt Island Condos

New York University has paid $9.4 million for a bloc of 25 condos in Riverwalk Landing on Roosevelt Island--the fourth and most recently completed building in the luxury residential complex being developed through a joint venture of Hudson Properties and the Related Companies.

David Kramer, a principal at Hudson Properties, confirmed in a phone interview today that the latest sale is "one of four or five closings" N.Y.U. has made on the 58 condos at Riverwalk that it agreed to purchase.  read more »

Rockrose Tires of Dorm Life

Rockrose Development Corp. appears to be selling an New York University dorm at 15 Cliff Street in lower Manhattan for over $60 million, financing firm Meridian Capital Group announced today. Meridian secured a $61 million loan for Lalezarian Properties to buy the property.

Maybe the 31-story building has some unconventional dorm rooms: the press release on the sale called the property a “luxury rental building.”

According to NYU’s student paper, the Washington Square News, Rockrose wanted to convert the property to condominiums, kicking out NYU for the current academic year. This past winter, Rockrose reconsidered, and now, it seems, has chosen a different path.
