A Look Back: Miley Cyrus Joins Lohan, Hilton, Wolfowitz in Denouncing Mean Magazine

Getty Images

As you may have already read, Miley Cyrus is totally embarrassed by the semi-topless (back view) photos printed of her in this month's Vanity Fair. In a statement put out by her publicist, Ms. Cyrus, age 15, said, "I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed... I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

Representatives of the magazine responded that during Annie Liebovitz's shoot, "Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day... Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."

This isn't the first time a star has felt stung by VF. Dewey ingenues like Lindsay Lohan and Paul Wolfowitz have complained of being misquoted and beloved icons like Courtney Love and Paris Hilton blame the magazine for their subsequent vilification. Here, a look back in anger, denial, and occasional admission.  read more »

Bloomberg-for-President Guy Says McCain Is No Obstacle

Uh-oh, Spaghetti-O…with booze! During Lindsay Lohan’s recent Italian vacation, she was caught guzzling Champagne from a bottle—the big and obvious kind—at a party. (For those who missed Ms. Lohan’s two recent DUI arrests, the actress and alcohol don’t get along very well.)  read more »

Paying for Jamie Lynn Spears' Pregnancy May Be 'OK!', But Is It All Right With 'US'?

Getty Images

Did OK!, the celebrity gossip magazine, really pay $1 million for exclusive rights to the Jamie Lynn Spears pregnancy story? US Weekly, a competing whisper weekly, seems to think so, going so far as to print the claim on the cover of US last week.

But, as an article in today’s Times points out, the prevalence of “checkbook journalism” is common among such publications. Paying celebs for exclusive photo and/or interview rights is hardly a novel notion.  read more »

New York's Hottest Society Clan of 2007!

Getty Images

Who can claim the title of 2007’s most socially social New York society clan? In a major year-end party wrap cobbled together by Style.com, the aesthetically-inclined Web site asks—and, thank gawd, answers—that very question.

On one side of the party divide is the Peter and Minnie Davis/Tinsley Mortimer team. (Mr. and Ms. Davis are, for those who didn’t know, Ms. Mortimer’s siblings-in-law.) On the other: Ann Dexter-Jones and her three party-hardy kids—Samantha, Mark and Charlotte.

As Style points out, it’s been quite a year for both clans: Topper and Ms. Mortimer’s wedding got a major write-up in the Times; and Ms. Davis tied the knot with Syriana director Stephen Gaghan. (What they don’t mention, however, is that 2007 was also the year society scribe Mr. Davis found true love in a certain young social, Paul Johnson-Calderon.)

Meanwhile, Mr. Ronson’s single, Stop Me, climbed to the number-two spot on the British charts—no small feat, to be sure. What’s more, Samantha Ronson was, for a while anyway, queen of the tabloids, soaking up the buzz as her friendship with Lindsay Lohan continued to heat up. And then there’s their younger sis Charlotte, who we caught up with not long ago at her Nolita boutique, where she was introducing her 2007 Resort collection. Ms. Dexter-Jones, too, told us all about her new lease on life post-divorce, loving the high-thread-count sheets at her new digs in the Bowery Hotel.

In the end, though, there can only be one winner; (as Heidi Klum might say, “You’re either in or you’re out.”) And in this case, Patrick McMullan must pick the winning bunch—“that ultimate litmus test of social visibility.” While the Dexter-Jones/Ronson squad racked up an impressive 422 photos credits on the social shutterbug’s Web site, the Davis/Mortimer clan reigns supreme. The trendy trio said "cheese" for Mr. McMullan’s lens a whopping 732 times.

A deal with the Devil?

Last week, celebrity life coach Patrick Wanis, PhD, wanted to tell our readers his list of the Top Ten Celebrity Meltdowns of 2007.

Today, on the phone with the Daily Transom, he got a little more daring.

First up: recent news that Lindsay Lohan has started to use the paparazzi to her own advantage, setting up and pocketing proceeds from snaps of her own mug.

“I say kudos to her!” he said. “I was thinking last week, Why don’t celebrities just use their brain? read more »

Lindsay Lohan: 'See Me Eat Cranberry Sauce!'

It looks like Lindsay Lohan has started to use the public’s hunger for pictures of her to the benefit of her wallet—something that has reportedly been a little thin of late. According to MSNBC, Ms. Lohan, 21, contacted a few media outlets to see if they wanted to fork over some serious cash in exchange for photos of her, mother Dina, little sis Ali, brothers and boyfriend Riley Giles munching, presumably behind closed doors, on Thanksgiving dinner.

“She thinks she’s a huge star. She thinks everyone is dying to read about her, but she’s lost her fan base. Her decisions are being driven by cash, not repairing her image,” an unnamed source, who claimed to be among those approached by the star, said. Ms. Lohan, who is preparing to record her third album, apparently started with a six-figure asking price before it was whittled to $20,000.

No photos have yet been sold, and the actress-singer’s rep denies the photographic yard sale ever happened. The day after Thanksgiving, however, Ms. Lohan was followed by her usual pack of paparazzi to Armani Exchange and Intermix boutiques in Manhattan. That trip, said another source close to the celebrity shopaholic, was arranged between Ms. Lohan and said stores. They added, “Seems like everything Lindsay does is to make money.” Well, not everything.

Lohan in Town for Turkey, Swank Spaghetti

This year, Lindsay Lohan has decided to give thanks for all her, um, good fortune in our fair city. The 21-year-old actress, who spent a few minutes in an L.A. jail last week for a pre-rehab dustup with the law, was spotted supping at Cipriani with her mother, Dina, and beaux du jour, Riley Giles. By the look on Ms. Lohan’s face in one lucky paparazzo’s snapshot, she was either shocked by the eatery’s $50 fritto misto or miffed at the snooping photog. (At least tomorrow over turkey, LiLo can give thanks that her mother isn’t starring in her own reality T.V. show!) Whatever the case, Ms. Lohan is apparently shacking up for the holiday at the Ritz Carlton on Central Park South, where she flashed the Transom a few months back.

Lindsay Lohan’s mother, Dina, was partying Tuesday night at the Tropicana Zone in Times Square.

“I’m doing a reality show; if you asked me two years ago, I’d be like, ‘You guys are smoking crack! I’m not doing this!’ But now I realize that I have no choice. I have to fix it for my little kids, and I have to fix my life,” she explained, while two ambiguous video-camera crews, complete with blinding lights, swirled around Ms. Lohan, 45, and her touchy twenty-something male friend, who was smiling behind strangely-appropriate dark sunglasses.  read more »

Michael Lohan, Lindsay’s pop, talked to the Transom's own Spencer Morgan at length about his troubled relationship with his daughter Lindsay and his also-rocky relationship with God.

He's still trying to patch things up with his family via the press: Mr. Lohan reportedly said yesterday that he wants “reconciliation and redemption—across the board … Just all of us getting right with God.” He went on to tell the AP that he blames himself for Lindsay’s recent troubles, which is new. (Both father and daughter have recently undergone rehabilitation for drugs and alcohol.)

“I made a commitment when I was in there to God and to myself that, when I got out, I was going to do God’s work, and I was going to share with other people what I’ve been through and how God changed my life,” LiLo’s pious pa apparently said.
